Dark Ascension Booster Packs

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/882

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. That’s probably not entirely accurate, since the whole point of a book cover is to convey some information about the book itself. But that’s not entirely on-topic, since we’re not talking about books today. We’re talking about booster packs! Here’s what a display box of Dark Ascension booster packs will look like:

Dark Ascension Mechanincs

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/177

  • Undying
  • Fateful Hour
  • Double-Faced Cards
  • Morbid
  • Flashback
  • Curses

With the archangel Avacyn still missing in action and the protective wards of the Avacynian church fading in power, the plane of Innistrad is starting to get a lot… darker. Dark Ascension brings new weapons for monsters and innocents alike and builds on the mechanics and themes of Innistrad.

Undying

Undying is a new keyword in Dark Ascension that lets creatures come back from the grave stronger than ever.

Strangleroot Geist

When your undying creature with no +1/+1 counters on it dies, you’ll return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. An undying creature that has one or more +1/+1 counters on it when it dies stays in the graveyard as normal.

It doesn’t matter where the +1/+1 counters came from, or whether a creature has already come back with a counter on it; all that matters is where the counters are when it dies. If your undying creature gets a +1/+1 counter on it (say, from Travel Preparations) and then dies, it won’t come back, even if that’s the first time it died. On the flip side, if you can get that +1/+1 counter off of an undying creature somehow after it comes back, it’ll come back yet again the next time it dies. Undying indeed!

If a creature ever has +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it, the two kinds of counters immediately “cancel out,” one for one, until only one kind of counter remains. For example, a creature with three +1/+1 counters and two -1/-1 counters would end up with one +1/+1 counter. There’s a twist, though: If a creature with +1/+1 counters on it gets enough -1/-1 counters to kill it, it dies before the two counters have the chance to cancel out. For example, if your Strangleroot Geist with a +1/+1 counter on it got three -1/-1 counters from Skinrender‘s “enters the battlefield” ability, the Geist would die with one +1/+1 counter and three -1/-1 counters and wouldn’t return to the battlefield.

Fateful Hour

They say the night is darkest just before the dawn, and the new fateful hour ability word in Dark Ascension takes that philosophy to heart.

Thraben Doomsayer

Fateful hour abilities work as long as you have 5 life or less. As soon as your life total drops to 5 or less, they immediately kick in. So you could pay some life to an Immolating Souleater in the middle of combat to suddenly give your team a boost with Thraben Doomsayer. As soon as your life total becomes 6 or higher, fateful hour abilities stop working—so gaining life with Thraben Doomsayer on the table might cause your creatures to get smaller in the middle of a turn.

Other fateful hour abilities may be triggered abilities, static abilities, or abilities that change what an instant or sorcery spell does.

Dark Ascension Promo Cards

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/881

oh, hello! Is it time for Dark Ascension previews already? My, my, how time flies. Well, you’ve probably already seen the big introduction to Dark Ascension Mechanics. And you’ve certainly read Mark Rosewater’s preview article. So there’s hardly anything left to do.

Except, perhaps, to show you all the delicious alternate-art foil cards that will be available (while supplies last) at various Dark Ascension events. Let’s do that!

Dark Ascension Prerelease

The Dark Ascension Prerelease is January 28-29, which seems so far away now. But it’s only three weeks! Less than that, in fact. And here’s what’s available for playing in one. While supplies last.

Dark Ascension Launch Party

A week after the prerelease, Dark Ascension goes on sale for real on February 3. And that kicks off the Launch Party, where this foil card lives:

Just like the prerelease card, you’ll get it just for participating (while supplies last).

Dark Ascension Game Day

Dark Ascension Game Day is February 25-26, and while supplies last, you’ll get this for participating:

And if you make the Top 8, you’ll get this!

Dark Ascension Buy-a-Box Card

Finally, here’s the “Buy-a-Box” card! It goes to the first twenty people to buy a Booster Box of Dark Ascension at participating locations. We’ll post the locations later, but here’s the card now!

Dark Ascension previews continue tomorrow. So come back then!

Vanaf Feb – Nieuwe Maandindeling

Vanaf Feb is er nieuwe maandindeling
1e donderdag : funavond Magic – format : Commander
2e donderdag : Magictornooi – format: draft + Boardgamenight
2e vrijdag: d&d (*vanaf maart)
3e donderdag : Magictornooi – format : sealed
extra donderdagen : Magictornooi – format : Pauper/Highlander/Tribal Wars
laatste donderdag : Boardgamenight
laatste vrijdag : Magictornooi FNM – format : draft

IPG Changes Jan 2012

Source: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/28790499/January_2012_IPG_Revisions?sdb=1

Some among you may have noticed that the January 2012 version of the IPG has been removed from the rules section of our website. The changes to that document have been met with a lot of scrutiny and confusion over the last few days, and rightly so.

While we work on a new version of that document, the October 2011 version will remain in effect. We hope to have the new version up before January 1, but working around the holidays can sometimes be chanllenging, so don’t be too surprised if it’s a bit later than that.

Let me emphasize some of the philosophies behind the tournament rules: 1) Tournament play should welcome new players, protect the honest, guard against abuse, and foster competition. 2) Different levels of play will have different levels of enforcement, but the game doesn’t change. The deck you bring to the kitchen table works the same way it does under the bright lights of the Pro Tour.

To that end:
1. Players will not be responsible for pointing out triggered abilities they don’t control. This change was met with near-universal praise. At competitive events, the player must assume responsibility for his or her own cards.
2. If an optional triggered ability is missed, it is missed. No player is penalized, and the ability is essentially “lost.” You can identify an optional triggered ability in two ways: it says “may” or it asks for a numeical choice (including number of targets), and 0 is a valid choice. The controller is simply assumed to have declined the ability or chosen 0, as appropriate.
3. Number of cards whose functionality is changing: 0. None. Zip. Zilch.
4. Number of cards that will play differently depending on what level of event you’re at: 0. The empty set. The big goose egg.

There will be additional information made available in time detailing what exactly the Missed Trigger infraction entails, who gets penalized for what and when, and what players and judges can expect. Until then, I’ll leave you with some principles of the changes:

1. If you forget a trigger that benefits you, you’re unlikely to be penalized for it ouside of missing out on the effect. There’s also little reason to alert a judge at that point. (e.g. Your opponent forgets to put a counter on his Shrine of Burning Rage. Just let it go. He’s not getting a warning or the counter.)
2. If you forget a trigger that is to your detriment, you’re likely to be penalized with a warning. Pay attention to your own stuff.
3. You will always have a window to point out that an opponent has forgotten a triggered ability and have the effect resolve. If he controls Honden of Whatever the White One Was Called, and you really want him to gain the 2 life, you’ll be able to have that happen.

Also, keep in mind that under the current and future sets of rules, purposefully forgetting a mandatory triggered ability in order to gain an advantage is Cheating. Capital C there.

There are a lot of weird situations (e.g. Howling Mine, Curses, etc.) that can come up, and we hope the new IPG will cover them all. Minor gaps may exist, and we’ll address them as we go along. (Really, I mean minor gaps, not glaring holes like last time.)

And one more thing - about the version of the IPG we posted on Monday. Nuke it. Flame it. Destroy it. – It hurts me to know it’s out there. Later.
